Blessed Damien, SS.CC

He is well known as Damien, the hero of the lepers of Molokai. Born on the 3rd of January 1840 in Tremelo, Belgium; his original name is Josef de Veuster. He entered the SS.CC  Congregation in 1859 in Leuven, Belgium. After his ordination to the priesthood on the 21st of May 1864, he worked for some years in some parts of the islands of Puna and Kohala in Hawaii.

In 1873, Damien heard the story about Molokai, a place where the lepers were thrown away and shut from the outer world. He felt a call to serve the lepers there and insisted to be given permission to stay together with the lepers in Molokai. On the 10th of May 1873, he arrived in Molokai and began his service to the lepers of Molokai. In 1884, it turned out that Damien was contracted with leprosy himself. He died on the 18th of  April 1889 as a leper. In 1936, his mortal remains were transferred to Leuven, Belgium. He was declared "Beato - Blessed -by Pope John Paul II in 1995.

His sanctification process, that is, the declaration to be a saint, is going on. In order to support this santification process , SS.CC Province of Indonesia is publishing two books: Damien: A Portrait (in English) and  Damien: Servant of God - Servant of Humanity (in Bahasa Indonesia).

Venerable Eustaquio van Lieshout, SS.CC

Fr. Eustaquio dedicated his whole life as a priest to the needy and was even decorated by King Albert of Belgium for his outstanding service. He carried out a very effective appostolate among the poor and the sick, demonstrating the spirit of sacrifice, self denial and boundless charity. As more and more people became aware of the great virtue of this holy priest, multitudes came to him seeking relief in body and spirit. In obedience to his superiors, Fr. Eustaquio avoided such demonatrations of  enthusiasm in order to continue his priestly ministry. Transfers took him to various parts of Brazil where he was able to do good. Exceptional gifts and miraculous cures were attributed to him. Thanks to the wise intervention of Archbishop Antonio dos Santos Cabral, he was assigned to Belo Horizonte where he was able to live and work in greater peace. As parochial vicar of Sacred Hearts parish, he zealously ministered in the city and sorrounding area giving retreats, preaching conferences, celebrating festivals and serving those who sought him out.

After a short but painful illness, suffered with true evangelical heroism and without the least complaint, the fruitful life of this tireless apostle came to an end. For the next five years, great numbers of those devoted to Fr. Eustaquio visited his grave in the cemetry of Bonfirm.

On January 31, 1949, his mortal remains were exhumed and transferred  to the Sacred Hearts church. Those devoted to Fr. Eustaquio continue to come to his tomb to confidently present petitions and those who have recieved favors through his intercession come to say thanks.
